Even in these most beard-tolerating of times, all men can benefit from having a razor at their disposal. A clean shave is, of course, the task razors are best suited to. However razors are a diverse tool, fantastic for detailing and shaping facial hair, tidying up hairlines, and clearing away neck hair, amongst other things.

Clean shaving can be a daunting concept to many men who are afraid of getting razor bumps, a common issue caused by ingrown hairs brought on after shaving. But with proper preparation (involving exfoliation, prepping the hair, using a sharp, well-designed razor, and using the correct technique), there’s no reason you should be reticent when it comes to using a razor.

Types of Razors for Men

There are three key types of razor, and which one works best for you depends on a few factors that we're going to cover in more detail below.

Modern Cartridge Razor - the modern cartridge razor is a marvel when it comes to preventing nicks and cuts. With multiple blades, usually between 3 and 5, held at a fixed angle, the first blades lift up the hair, allowing it to be caught by the following blades. This means hair can be easily cut without having to press the blade into the skin, a common cause of cuts. The downsides of modern cartridge razors is that they may cause ingrown hairs, razor bumps, and potentially irritation to the surface of the skin. Proper technique is likely to prevent these issues for most, however, those who repeatedly experience these problems may want to consider other options.
Double Edged Safety Razor - double edged safety razors offer control that is a step up from a cartridge razor. Their design allows you to angle the blade in almost any way you wish, meaning you can get closer to the root of the hair in one pass of the razor. While nicks and cuts are more common, meaning technique is absolutely crucial, this 0method should be effective for the majority of men provided it's combined with exfoliation, use of a badger brush, and a traditional shaving cream. Those with curly facial hair in particular should consider this method.
Straight Razor - a straight razor or cut-throat razor offers the maximum degree of control, and with proper technique can be used for a smooth shave without irritation. It earned its name for a reason, however, and most would only trust a trained professional to avoid the danger of incurring serious injury.
