The phrase 'pulling your hair out' was always meant to be a figure of speech and with a little help it's possible to hold onto your glorious head of hair indefinitely. However, most men (the Mankind team included) are often unsure where to start once male hair loss hits, which is why the institute of Trichologists (hair loss experts) thought to highlight the solutions available with a ‘Hair Loss Awareness Month’. In association with this worthy cause the team at Mankind have gathered a comprehensive range of hair loss solutions and the information you need to choose the most effective product for your hair.

Hair Loss - Causes and Types

First of all, it’s important to know that there are a number of different types of hair loss.

Primarily there is thinning hair, which is when you lose more than 150 hairs daily. A simple test for this is to hold about 15-20 hairs between your thumb and index finger and to tug. If more than 6 hairs come out then there may be a problem.

Secondly there is the receding hair line. This is perhaps the most common form of hair loss and occurs in almost 40% of men in their 20s. Often it's hereditary and passed down through either your mother or your father, so if someone on either side of the family suffers from hair loss it's worth checking your hairline every six months.

Thirdly there is patchy hair loss, which is often caused by stress, bad diet and illness. This type of hair loss can come on suddenly and should be handled with caution. Go see the doctor, and once you're given the go-ahead there are a number of impressive products that will help you get back to the hairier you.

Hair loss can be caused by a number of factors. Poor health, sunburn, smoking, diet and stress can induce or speed up a receding hairline, but by far the biggest contributor to male hair loss is the hormone DHT, or Dihydrotestosterone.

We could now explain why DHT causes male hair loss, in excessive detail if we had to, but the long and the short of it is this; DHT causes the scalp to stop reproducing hair, and baldness ensues. Fortunately there are a number of products you can use to reduce levels of DHT and stop the process.

Hair Loss - Actions

Over the next week we are going to highlight the best hair loss solutions, and draw attention to our favorites, including Nioxin and Viviscal. The important thing to note is that hair loss is much harder to reverse than it is to prevent, so even if you do have long manly locks you should read on and consider these products a long term investment.
